복리는 이번 기간에 붙은 이자가 다음 기간에는 원금에 합쳐져 그 이자에도 다시 이자가 붙는 구조예요. 처음엔 원금에만 이자가 붙는 단리와 큰 차이가 없어 보이지만, 시간이 길어질수록 이자가 이자를 낳는 눈덩이 효과가 가속되어 격차가 벌어진다는 점이 핵심이에요. 그래서 복리에서 가장 중요한 변수는 흔히 생각하는 수익률보다 '시간'과 '중간에 빼 쓰지 않는 것'이라고 자주 강조돼요. 같은 수익률이라도 일찍 시작해 오래 굴릴수록 결과의 차이가 극적으로 커지거든요. 다만 복리는 손실에도 똑같이 작동한다는 점을 놓치기 쉬워요. 한 해 크게 빠지면 그 줄어든 원금에서 다시 불려야 하기 때문에 회복이 생각보다 더디게 느껴질 수 있죠. 예를 들어 연 7% 복리를 가정하면 원금이 약 10년마다 두 배가 되는 식으로 어림할 수 있지만, 이는 어디까지나 가정값이고 실제 수익률과 세금, 수수료에 따라 결과는 달라집니다.Compound interest is the structure where the interest earned in one period is added to the principal so that the next period's interest is calculated on that interest too. Assuming a 7% annual rate, principal roughly doubles about every ten years, but that is only an assumption, and actual returns, taxes, and fees change the result.
